It’s the beginning of 2017, I’m 27 years old and I still don’t know how to get to Sesame Street. Though I think I know some other things, that one has been bugging me since I read about it earlier this morning.
Some of you reading (look at me pretending people are reading this) are probably thinking ‘So what?’ It’s not like I’ve failed to achieve a life goal. Whilst this probably should be true, I have never been an advocate of long term planning. Anyone that knows me well can likely remember a goal as equally ridiculous that I’ve set my heart on. The quest for Sesame Street could easily come up again two or three more times this year. Outside chance that it could even define 2017.
2016 was a year where I was struck by the concept of a work/life balance for the first time. I think because it’s the first time I feel that it’s shifted in the wrong direction. I’ve worked jobs with longer hours and with far worse conditions, but I’ve never struggled more to see what I’m supposed to be working towards. In broad terms, I want 2017 to be lodged firmly the other side of that particular fence.
This blog is going to be a chronicle of that ill-defined quest. As of now, I am looking to change jobs. Rather than languishing and whinging about being underpaid and under utilised, I am looking for opportunities to show that this is true, rather than just saying it. If I am going to stick it out in the corporate world, I want it to be on my terms rather than ‘by default’. How successful this will be remains to be seen, but you’re all welcome to join me for the journey.
I’m also looking to do more constructive things with my free time rather than ‘wasting’ it by playing video games or doing not very much. I’ll still be doing both of those things, but again I want it to be an active choice rather than a default option. In my head, I want to have at least one out of the ordinary event a week. This weekend I’m heading to Chester for a house warming party with the Chemists via Nottingham on Friday to visit a Chemist who became a Physicist. If I’m not bored of writing and you’re somehow not bored of reading, those events will likely feature here.
I also want to travel more. Every time I go somewhere I remember how much I like to travel but never really do anything about it. 2017 is shaping up to be a good year for travel with two trips booked (Texas and Tanzania) with at least one more being planned. I haven’t really got a defined travel goal, but when I have travelled a bit someone smarter than me might find a theme that links it all together.
I’m also likely to ramble the random shit that flies about my head and sometimes make it hurt. I can’t promise there will be any real structure or coherence to the themes of this, but if you’re a fan of the absurd or the ridiculous then this might be the part for you.
Now that you’re all bored to tears, I’ll leave it there for now. Hopefully this has given you some of the answers you didn’t want to questions you probably wouldn’t have asked.
